In an effort to establish fair measures and standardize freight pricing, the[ National Motor Freight Traffic Association ](http://www.nmfta.org/)(NMFTA) created the [National Motor Freight Classification](http://www.nmfta.org/pages/nmfc) (NMFC) system that classifies all commodities in the United States into one of 18 classifications. Effective August 5, 2023, there will be several changes to classifications that you should be aware of as a shipper.

Freight classes range between 50 and 500 – the higher the class, the more expensive the shipping costs per pound. Below is an explanation of the factors that determine Freight Classification:

Failure by the shipper to adhere to proper identification can result in unexpected charges due to reclassification by the carrier. Below is a listing of some of the major group categories that will be changing:

- Athletic Goods
- Games or Toys
- Drugs Medicines or Toilet Preparations or Personal Care Products
- Building Materials/Miscellaneous
- Adhesives
- Office or Store Equipment
- Building Metalwork
- Lumber
- Furniture
- Foodstuffs
- Machinery
- Automobile Parts
